The National Marine Manufacturers Association and boating journalists honored the revolutionary anchor system giving Premier its fourth innovation award in five years.

Big Lake, Minn. Family Ownership and a People First Approach is Fueling Premier’s Growth Trajectory

Big Lake, Minn. June 30, 2025 – It’s a modern-day success story of a family-owned business making it in an industry dominated by large corporations. That’s the scenario being played out on the lakes, waterways, and marine dealerships across North America as Premier Marine, located in the small town of Big Lake, Minnesota is succeeding in a market where others are not. Chris Carlson, the family patriarch and current Premier Marine CEO, saw something in Premier that appealed to his entrepreneurial spirit. “I was looking for a business where I could leverage the lessons and success we gained over 25-years with Sportech (Carlson’s previous business) and combine that with something I was passionate about,” said Chris. “Premier was the perfect fit.”

Developing a Winning Culture

Soon after the purchase in the spring of 2021, Carlson began the journey of developing a winning culture at Premier by building the right team; developing and implementing strong core values; completing a new world-class manufacturing facility; and rebuilding Premier’s dealer network. Along the way, many obstacles had to be overcome and lessons were learned.

“This has been the hardest business challenge I’ve ever faced, by far,” said Carlson. “Initially I thought we would find success sooner, but as I look back at the past four years it’s clear there was no way to accelerate or rush Premier’s recovery. Building trust takes time, and we’ve had to prove ourselves to our internal team, to our dealer network, and to the industry.”

Building a Winning Pontoon

As some Premier team members worked to build the right dealership partners, others focused on customers and returning Premier pontoons to the forefront. From now until December 12th, Premier is asking for donations of new and unwrapped toys to be dropped off at the Premier lobby located at 1200 Minnesota Avenue in Big Lake, Minnesota. Inside you’ll find Santa’s pontoon and the goal is to fill it with toys this holiday season.

“Many of us are incredibly blessed, and this is just one small way we can share our blessings with others who may not be as fortunate,” said Chris Carlson, owner and CEO of Premier Marine. “For me nothing is more special than to see the smiling faces of my grandchildren on Christmas morning. Known to most Midwest anglers as simply Walleyedan, Dan will make the switch to Premier’s exclusive Six-Point Angler.

“I’m really excited about this pontoon,” said Dan. “There’s many reasons why I chose the Six-Point Angler for my guide service. June 20, 2024 – Veterans and active duty soldiers will have an opportunity to experience the world-class fishing and serenity of Minnesota’s Northwest Angle thanks to the graciousness of Aaron Kolling and Dude Essig. It was through their donations and a passion to honor and recognize those who serve or have served, that the Angle Anchor of Honor came to be.

The Angle Anchor of Honor is a pontoon purchased by the Edge Riders Snowmobile Club through the  donations of Aaron and Dude. After visiting the Northwest Angle area of Lake of the Woods, Aaron felt an overwhelming sense of peace and tranquility and immediately started dreaming up ways to extend this experience to those who risked their lives for our country. The Angle Anchor of Honor is the culmination of those dreams.

Aaron and Dude reached out to Northstar Powersports & Marine in Albert Lea, Minnesota, and Premier Pontoons of Big Lake, Minnesota, to find a handicap accessible option to accommodate a greater population of veterans. The Angle Anchor of Honor is a 25-foot Premier Sunsation Angler series fishing pontoon with ample seating, a host of fishing-focused amenities, and exclusive features like Premier’s Open Water Panels that will make it easier for disabled veterans to enjoy the experience.

“I guess we’ve always felt it was so important to thank and honor our veterans,” said Aaron Kolling. “Whether it’s shaking a veteran’s hand at the airport, picking up the tab for them at a restaurant, or donating to local organizations, we’ve both always tried to be generous and grateful in any way we could. This just seemed like the right thing to do, and we’re both fortunate enough to be able to make it happen.”

The pontoon will be available through Northwest Angle resorts for use, along with a qualified guide, at no cost to veterans and active-duty military soldiers and their guest. To ensure everyone’s comfort, ease of fishing, and safety, trips will be limited to four people plus a guide. The newly formed Angle Anchor of Honor organization will be reaching out to veteran organizations throughout the United States to make them aware of the opportunity. In addition, they will be publishing a website along with associated social media accounts in the near future.

May 14, 2024 – As a farm kid growing up on the rolling croplands of southwestern Minnesota, lake life wasn’t something Premier Production Manager Pete Spoelstra had instilled at a young age. Instead it was tractors, combines, and watching his father work as a certified Massey Ferguson mechanic. By the time he was 16, Pete was often working alongside his father in the shop, learning, listening, and soaking in the mechanical workings at every turn. After graduation, Pete’s fascination with airplanes and an exemplary score on his military ASVAB test set him on a path that would become a 20-year career in the U.S. Air Force. It was this military experience that attracted Pete to Premier – a combination of a world-class manufacturing facility, an industry leader in innovation, and perhaps most importantly, core values that echoed those of his own. A natural leader who brings energy and likable spirit to every situation, Premier would like to thank Pete for his 20-years of service and the valuable leadership and mentorship he brings to our organization. Let’s meet Pete.

Tell us a little about your military career.

I worked on or around F-16 airplanes for nearly my entire 20 year Air Force career. Ten of those were spent overseas including two deployments. I was also fortunate enough to have two incentive flights in the back seat of an F-16 where I learned that I was meant to stay on the ground. One of the highlights of my military career was being selected to the “Thunderbirds” air demonstration team as the Production Superintendent for two show seasons.

How has your military career shaped who you are today?

I’ve worked with people from all over the world and experienced many different cultures. That exposure has helped me gain a greater appreciation for diverse teams and the benefits that people with a different world view, a different perspective, or different ideas than my own can bring to a team, an organization, or company.

 How has your military career prepared you for your position at Premier?

Manufacturing can certainly be fast paced and high stress. However, having been tested in austere conditions and preparing a team for combat missions, I feel I’m better prepared to maintain perspective, stay calm, and continue to make level-headed decisions.

 What do you like most about working at Premier?

I love the speed with which we can make changes. There is no “corporate Premier watchdog” that we need approval from. Here, all ideas are welcome…and we aren’t afraid to take risks. More importantly, work ethic is appreciated and rewarded.

 Do you have any advice or insights you’d like to share with the Premier community?

Specifically for my aircraft maintenance friends in the military, look into manufacturing when you’re ready to hang up the uniform. Your skills are more translatable than you realize and you don’t need to focus so narrowly on the defense industry. For everyone else, find a place that appreciates you and the skills you bring.

Pete has been Premier Production Manager for nearly two years, and he quickly developed a love for the lake life along with his wife of 14 years (Michaela) and their two daughters.
